Beyond Attire

Beyond Attire is a visual-anthropological exploration of perception, attribution, and what becomes visible of a person when a central system of orientation is removed: clothing.
In everyday life, clothing functions as a social system of signs. It communicates belonging, status, profession, style, and cultural positioning—often before a conversation even begins. In Beyond Attire, this system is deliberately withdrawn.
The portrayed individuals appear without clothing, reduced to face and upper body. This reduction is not a staging of nudity, but a shift in perception: it invites the viewer to interrupt habitual readings and to reflect on their own practice of categorizing.
What remains when visual markers are absent?

The work understands itself as a process of decoding. It makes visible how strongly perception is shaped by culturally learned patterns—while at the same time opening a space in which these patterns can be unsettled and renegotiated.
Beyond Attire is therefore not only a photographic series, but an invitation:

Beyond Attire ist eine visuell-anthropologische Auseinandersetzung mit Wahrnehmung, Zuschreibung und dem, was vom Menschen sichtbar wird, wenn ein zentrales Ordnungssystem entfällt: Kleidung.
Kleidung fungiert im Alltag als soziales Zeichensystem. Sie vermittelt Zugehörigkeit, Status, Profession, Stil und kulturelle Verortung – oft noch bevor ein Gespräch beginnt. In Beyond Attire wird dieses System bewusst entzogen.
Die porträtierten Menschen erscheinen ohne Kleidung, reduziert auf Gesicht und Oberkörper. Diese Reduktion ist keine Inszenierung von Nacktheit, sondern eine Verschiebung der Wahrnehmung: Sie lädt dazu ein, gewohnte Lesarten zu unterbrechen und die eigene Praxis des Einordnens zu reflektieren.

Die Arbeit versteht sich als Prozess der Dekodierung. Sie macht sichtbar, wie stark Wahrnehmung von kulturell erlernten Mustern geprägt ist – und eröffnet zugleich einen Raum, in dem diese Muster irritiert und neu verhandelt werden können.
Beyond Attire ist damit nicht nur eine fotografische Serie, sondern eine Einladung:
